Plainedge Middle School Library

Student Commons & Media Center

One of the primary goals in designing this library was to create a space that could evolve alongside the people who use it. Flexible, multi-use seating arrangements support individual focus, group collaboration, and lecture-style presentations, allowing the client to adapt the space for the needs they know today, as well as uses they may not have anticipated yet.

Dedicated work areas provide generous counter-height surfaces where students can spread out. The space gives them room to think, create, and work ergonomically and comfortably.  At the heart of the library, a central lounge defined by a cluster of hexagonal forms fabricated from acoustic PET felt cascade from the ceiling plane serving as a noise diffuser and the room’s focal point.  A mix of small and large tables allows students to work independently while still feeling connected to the group, or to come together when collaboration calls for more space.

The result is a library designed around choice: how to work, how to gather, how to focus, and how the space can adapt over time.
