A Place of Reflection — 9/11 Memorial
When we were entrusted with the vision of creating a lasting tribute to those lost on September 11, 2001, we felt the weight of that responsibility deeply. This was not just a design commission— it was a call to honor memory, resilience, and unity.
At the heart of the memorial stand two sculptural towers, built on a stainless-steel armature clad in rigid architectural stainless steel mesh panels- materials chosen to echo the distinctive facade of the original towers while speaking to permanence and resilience. The towers rise from a pentagon-shaped pedestal base of black granite, its dark, polished surface lending the memorial a sense of gravity and quiet dignity. The surrounding pavers echo this same pentagon form, extending the geometry outward from the base into the plaza itself- a quiet nod to the lives lost at the Pentagon on that same morning. Rising 8 feet, the towers are rendered in the same proportion as the original World Trade Center towers, a scale of approximately 1:170. LED lighting is integrated within the sculpture, illuminating the towers from within so they remain a quiet, glowing presence from dusk into night. Every detail of scale was considered with intention: even at this reduced scale, the towers carry an echo of their true form, allowing visitors to sense the presence of what once stood. The towers are also set in the same geographic orientation as the original World Trade Center, so that the memorial does not merely represent the towers — it stands in their place, facing as they once faced.
Encircling the centerpiece are the engraved names of local residents who lost their lives, etched with care to create a sense of intimacy and dignity. A portion of the memorial stands in quiet readiness to bear the names of those whose lives continue to be taken by 9/11-related illness. Pathways extend with quiet grace, leading visitors into the heart of the memorial and inviting them to pause, gather, or stand in silence and remembrance.
This memorial is not only about loss— it is about resilience. The design embodies the spirit of a community that came together in the wake of tragedy and continues to uphold the values of compassion, unity, and strength.
MDS is humbled to contribute to this sacred space, a place where generations will pause, reflect, and remember— honoring those who fell at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and aboard Flight 93.
