Malone-Mulhall Recreation Center at Camp ANCHOR

A Legacy of Compassionate Design for All Abilities

The Malone-Mulhall Recreation Center at Camp ANCHOR in Lido Beach, NY, stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of community and remembrance. Opened in 2014, this 16,196-square-foot facility was designed to honor the memory of three dedicated camp counselors—Jamie and Paige Malone and Michael Mulhall—who tragically lost their lives in a car accident in 2010. Their legacy lives on through this state-of-the-art space, which serves as a year-round hub for individuals with special needs.

Design Features:

  • Inclusive Architecture: The center's design incorporates universal accessibility, ensuring that all individuals, regardless of ability, can navigate and utilize the space comfortably.

  • Multi-Purpose Gymnasium: A spacious gymnasium featuring a rubber poured-in-place athletic flooring system and a stage accommodates a variety of activities, from physical fitness programs to theatrical performances, fostering both physical and creative expression.

  • Specialized Facilities: The center includes a full kitchen, computer room, nurse's office equipped with a bath and shower, administrative offices, and ADA-compliant restrooms, all thoughtfully designed to meet the diverse needs of its users.

  • Nautical Theme: The exterior was carefully designed to suit the ocean-front location in a nautical theme with porthole windows, railings and a gleaming white split-face CMU reminiscent of coral.  The building's sloping rooflines and large windows further reflect the dynamic shapes of boats and waves, creating a sense of openness and connection to the water.

Community Impact:

Serving over 1,600 participants, the Malone-Mulhall Recreation Center provides a safe and welcoming environment where individuals with special needs can engage in a variety of recreational, educational, and therapeutic activities. The center's programs, including fitness classes, drama workshops, and social events like Club A.N.C.H.O.R. dances, are designed to promote socialization, skill development, and community integration.

The Malone-Mulhall Recreation Center not only honors the memory of three remarkable individuals but also embodies the values of inclusion, compassion, and community. Its thoughtful design and diverse offerings continue to enrich the lives of all who walk through its doors.  It was an honor working with the Town of Hempstead on this remarkable facility.
