Howell Elementary School Library renovation
The Valley Stream 13 School District set out to reimagine the Howell Road Elementary School library, which had not been updated since 1999. Partnering with Mark Design Studios, the goal was to transform the space into a bright, vibrant, and engaging environment tailored to today’s students.
The design includes areas for learning, reading, and innovation. The learning area accommodates up to 26 students with mobile desks that can be easily reconfigured to support both small group work and full-class instruction. The reading area has ample floor space for the younger kids to gather with colorful lounge and stool seating as well. The innovation area, shaped by a playful house-shaped structure, features a writable-surface table that encourages brainstorming and collaboration. Flexible ottomans within this space can be used as stools, rockers, or adapted in ways that allow students to engage creatively. Vibrant colors, tactile finishes, and varied textures were carefully selected to energize the environment and spark student imagination.
The existing conditions of this space lead to the unique and creative design of the project. Existing ductwork in the ceiling (that was too costly to move) led to the design developing an organic shape in the ceiling so that part of the ceiling could be raised higher than the rest. Existing columns were covered in a textured alphabet wallcovering to engage tactile learners. Thick walls were modified so that some bookcases could be recessed, therefore opening up more floor space and enhancing functionality of the library.
Despite challenges with lead times, the construction of the space was very successful and the clients are excited to utilize this space now.
